Homework Assignments


Here is a list of the various HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS for MUSC 216. Generally, the homework will consist of:

- Completing a programming assignment

- Saving a copy of your homework assignment in a folder which you have setup in the computer's Shared Folder.

- Making a backup copy of your homework assignement on some location or device (such as a flash memory device, or your VU Space.

- Answering a set of Study Questions (usually on online form) associated with the homework assignment. See the Class Schedule for a description of the specific sets of Study questions and the dates when they are due.

Generally, homework assignments will not be graded. However, there are THREE homework assignments which will be graded -- please see below.

Graded Homework (such as cue sheets), Study Questions, and any in-class Quizzes will all be grouped together and will constitute 20% of the overall grade.

DESCRIPTION of Homework for the
1st half of the semester:

Homework 1: A simple "Bell" patch using JSYD. See Additive Synthesis for guidelines and help.

Homework 2: A more complex "Bell" patch using JSYD which has pairs of de-tuned oscillators, multiple envelopes, and an EXPRESSION function. Refer to the previous assignment.

Homework 3: A "Recorder" patch which demonstrates techniques of deconstructing a note played by a real recorder.

Homework 4: A "hellicopter" patch using JSYD which demonstrates noise, filter and modulation control of the filter bandwidth.

Homework 5: An FM "Bell" patch using JSYD. See FM Synthesis for guidelines and help.

Homework 6: AmadeusII: Create an Aiff file consisting of THREE of your JSYD sounds pasted together.

Homework 7: Creating your own electronic music composition using SoundTrack. See the tutorial, Creating Your Own Electronic Music Composition.

Submit this homework assignment on a CD:

- Copy your ENTIRE Composition Folder (which you created in the Shared Folder of your computer and which should contain ALL your composition files) onto a CDR.

- Label the CD clearly: My Composition. Also include on the label your NAME, EMAIL address, and TELEPHONE #

- Be sure to CHECK THE CD before you submit it (take it out of the drive, then put it back in; open the CD to see if your files copied correctly).

- Give the finished CD to the professor for evaluation.

This is how your Composition Homework will be graded:

1. Was it submitted on time? The deadline is the end of class, for example: 12:15. If the CD is not given to the instructor before EXACTLY 12:15 the grade will be lowered by ONE letter grade.

2. Was the CD is labeled properly: Name, email, phone#. If the CD is not labeled correctly the grade will be lowered by ONE letter grade.

3. Was the Composition folder is organized correctly: Then only files at the top of the directory should be: (1) the SoundTrack file, (2) the exported MIXED aiff file. All other files such as soundfiles should be in SUB-FOLDERS. If any files other than the SoundTrack file and the exported aiff file are at the top of the directory, the grade will be lowered by ONE letter grade for EACH file.

4. Does the Composition meet the minimum requirements: at least 3 separate sound files, at least 1 amplitude envelope, at least 1 panning effect, at least one other effect from the SoundTrack Effects library such as reverb, chorus, etc. If no effects are used the grade will be lowered by ONE letter grade for EACH.

Homework 9 Isadora: Play notes on one row of keys for MIDI Channel 1. Submit your homework assignment by emailing a copy to the Professor. See the Class Schedule for details.

Homework 10 Isadora: Add an ALL NOTES OFF scene to your Project2Controller which will turn off ALL notes when you press the SPACEBAR. See the Class Schedule for details.

Homework 11 Isadora: Add a PROGRAM CHANGE scene to your Project2Controller which will change the sound of your synthesizer when you make a selection from a POPUP menu in the Controls Window. See the Class Schedule for details.

Homework 12 Isadora: Add CONTROL CHANGE controls to your Project2Controller so you can change the VOLUME, PAN, and MODULATION. See the Class Schedule for details.
